親しい相手との会話の中で、相手の言葉がはっきり聞き取れずに、
聞き返すことってありますよね。
例えば、同僚との会話で、
“I’m not sure if I can come to the party tonight.”
と、言われた際に、相手の言葉が聞き取れずに、
「え？何って言ったの？」と聞き返す場合、あなたなら何と言いますか？
“I beg your pardon?”
この言い方は非常にフォーマルで、同僚などの親しい関係の相手との会話で使うのは少々不自然ですね。
こんな場面ではもっとカジュアルに、
“Come again?”
と言ってみましょう。

He couldn't catch what I said.
And he says, I beg your pardon?
OK which is a perfectly common phrase.
But, it's a really formal phrase.
And we don't use it with our colleagues so much.
You know, because it's just too formal.
I beg your pardon? Yeah.
Pardon me? It's still a little bit formal.
So a little bit more casual way to say,
you know what did you say? Can you say that again?
We use come again. OK just means can you say that again?
So if I say, yeah I'm not sure if I can
come to the party tonight.
Or come to the meeting tonight.
Or come to the conference tonight.
And say, oh come again?
Just like that. It's really fast. Come again?
OK. Come again?

So it means, hey can you say that one more time?
