Tip 68 ”in tandem” 無料ビジネス英語学習
無料ビジネス英語学習 Words & Phrases 第68弾は、”in tandem” です。
仕事ができる人は、色々な仕事を同時並行して進めることができますよね。
今回のフレーズは、この「同時並行で」進める状態を表現する際につかえます。
例えば、部下から
“Should I finish the CS project before starting the new one?”
「新しいプロジェクトに取りかかる前に、CSプロジェクトは終えたほうがよいですか?」
と聞かれた際に、「同時並行で進めてください。」と伝えたい場合あなたならどういいますか?
日本人は “at the same time” はよく知っているため、
“Please do it at the same time.”
などといった言い方が思い浮かんだ人は多いかもしれません。
ただこの “at the same time” は、まさに「同時に」行うことを意味しており、
並行して進める、といったニュアンスは含んでいません。
今回のように「同時並行で」進めて欲しい場合には、
“Please work on them in tandem.”
というようにしましょう。

In tandem.
What does it mean?
Hmm OK. Now, here's what I often hear.
OK. So example, let's say Taro is my boss.
He's giving me a new project.
OK and I say,
Ah Taro should I finish the CS project
before starting this new one?
And he says, ah please do it at the same time.
OK, but I only have two hands.
You know, it's it's, it's ah at the same time.
I'm, I have supposed to have both meetings
at the same time OK.
Same time, literally means at the same time.
OK at 3 o'clock, you do it.
And of course, that's not what Taro means.
He wants, he wants me to do this project
and this project, you know, in parallel. Right.
OK, I'll work on this project. And then I'll work on this project.
I'll go back to this project.
OK, is what he wants to say.
But it doesn't sound like that.
So what he should say is this:
So if I say, yeah should I finish the CS project
before starting the new one?
And he'll say, ah no,
please work on them in tandem.
OK, no problem, I could do that.
I, I will use my time management skills
and balance my workload.
