Tip 39 ”But it’s all hearsay.” 無料ビジネス英語学習
無料ビジネス英語学習 Words & Phrases 第39弾は、”But it’s all hearsay.” です。
例えば、ミーティングにおいて、実際に調査をしたわけでなく誰かから伝え聞いた情報を、
あたかも事実であるかのように伝えられていると感じた際に
「しかし、それは伝え聞いた情報ですよね。」と言いたい場合、あなたならどう言いますか?
こうした「証拠がない聞き伝えの内容」を意味する英語として使えるのが、”hearsay” なんですね。
上記言いたいことを直訳する形でいうと、
“But you did’t get feedback directly from them.”
といったような表現になると思うのですが、この “hearsay” をつかって
“But it’s all hearsay.”
といえば、とてもシンプルかつナチュラルに相手に意図が伝わります。
ぜひ覚えてつかってみてください。
Hello and welcome to this Bizmates words and phrases
video series for Japanese businesspeople.
And today's phrase is a useful one for meetings.
We say, but it's all hearsay.
OK, so we'll look at this in just a minute.
But first, let's do our usual test.
So what are your chances of working overseas?
10% chance?
20% chance?
A 100% chance?
OK, do you want to work overseas?
I do, actually I'm overseas now.
I'm working, I'm in Japan, I'm working.
And I'm from Canada, so I'm working overseas.
OK, well I hope you can too.
OK, let's go on to today's phrase which is useful for meetings.
But it's all hearsay.
What does that mean? Hearsay, hearsay.
Maybe you've heard of it before.
Well, let me show you an example.
So, I'm in a meeting with Taro, and I say.
Yeah you know Taro,
many employees are unhappy with the new system that we have.
This new system.
And Taro says,
But you didn't get the feedback directly from them.
You heard it from other people right?
So it's not direct feedback right?
You know, that's true and I'll say yeah,
OK that's true, yeah it's just a rumor. That's right.
But that's, that's...
It's not really smooth right?
You didn't get feedback directly from the user, end user.
It's really a clumsy sentence.
Yeah, so what you could say,
in that case is like this.
So if I say, Yeah you know Taro,
many employees are unhappy with the new system.
I think we should change it.
And Taro says,
Well, wait a second Hika.
But that's,
It's all hearsay.
Well yes, you're right.
I didn't, I didn't speak.
I didn't have a survey and ask a hundred people.
And sixty percent of them. No it's nothing like that.
It's just rumors, that's true. It's hearsay.
So next time in a meeting someone says,
Oh yeah, yeah you know this is how the customers feel.
Or yeah, yeah, this is our employees feel.
You could say, wow, did you take a survey?
Or is that all hearsay?
It's all hearsay.
Because a lot of times in meetings, people just...
You know, they don't have real evidence.
It's just hearsay.
OK, so let's look at pronunciation.
Butit'sall, it's kind of put together.
Butit'sall hearsay Butit'sall hearsay.
You try, butit'sall hearsay.
OK let's try it with my sentence.
So many employees are unhappy with the new system.
Yeah, you're right.
It is all hearsay.
OK, good.
I hope you were able to get that.
OK so for homework, just simple,
I want you to practice this phrase, but it's all hearsay.
I'm gonna say, you know,
everyone is unhappy with this new system.
And you say, well it's all hearsay.
OK it's not fact.
It's just rumor. OK.
All right, so please try this for homework.
We'll see you, thank you.
