Here's what I sometimes hear...

The new hires. New employees in our company.
And I say:
You know, these young recruits are really smart.
You know, this group of young recruits
are so smart... intelligent.
And Taro says:
Yes, they're on the elite course.
OK, I understand the meaning
but you know, in English
we we don't say "elite course"
because "elite" just sounds very
like high-class. Like
I'm better than all of you.
I'm an elite. It just doesn't sound good. I know
in Japanese English you use it alot, but in
English we don't use it like that.
Like an "elite course."
He's an elite. OK, because we want
to be fair. Fair and balanced.
OK, so a more natural way to say this is like this
So if I say:
You know these young recruits are really smart.
They have a lot of talent. And Taro says:
Yes, they're on the fast track.
OK, I see. That makes sense.
OK, so they have a lot of potential. They have talent,
so they're getting a little bit of extra push.
Maybe they're put on a special program,
so they can become a manager more
quickly than the other recruits. OK.
But they're not like on the elite course.
That doesn't sound too good.
