Tip 150 ”a tough break” 無料ビジネス英語学習
無料ビジネス英語学習 Words & Phrases 第150弾は、”a tough break” です。
不運にも残念な結果になってしまうことってありますよね。今回はそんな場面で使える表現を紹介します。
例えば、ヒカは同僚のタロウに
“We lost that big contract.”「あの大型契約、なくなっちゃったよ。」と言いました。
「それは不運だね。」と返答したい場合、あなたがタロウなら英語で何と言いますか?
“Oh, that’s too bad.”「あ~あ、それは残念。」
でも伝わりますが、より自然な言い回しがあります。
そこで
“That’s a tough break.”「それは不運だね。」
と言ってみましょう。

and today's idiom is "a tough break"
What's a tough break? Tough. Break.
Well, we will find out but first let's do
our test.
Okay, so I'm complaining to you
"You said it wouldn't rain today, but it's
raining."
That's right.
OK, OK. I take it back. Just like that.
Okay? Let's go on to today's idiom -- a tough break.
But here's what I usually hear. Okay,
so let's imagine that Taro is my
colleague
and I have a bad day, okay? I'm having a
bad day.
And I say "You know, Taro, we lost
that big contract.
We almost got it. But, we lost it."
And Taro says "Oh, that's too bad."
Okay, nothing's wrong with this, "that's too bad" but
you know we hear it so often -- that's
too bad
we hear it so often that there's no real
feeling
you know, it's like "Well, that's too bad."
Shoganai.
Kind of like that. So we want a phrase
that has a little bit more feeling. Like "Oh, too bad.
That's okay." Like this. So we could say
this
if I say "Yeah, we lost that big contract.
I'm so sad." You can say?
That's a tough break. That's a tough
break. And say it with feeling. "That's a tough
break." Like this. Okay let's check pronunciation
So it's "That'sa... That's tough break."
Yeah, so it's not breaK. But it's That'sa tough break.
The "K" is really soft. Okay, you try.
That's a tough break.
Good. Okay, with my sentence, say with
feeling
okay? "Oh we lost that big contract. I can't believe it."
Thanks.
Like this. Okay for homework, okay I'm
gonna say
Yeah we lost that big contract. And you
say...
That's right. "That's a tough break."
Okay please remember this
and we'll see you
next time. Thank you.
