Tip 146 ”out of the question” 無料ビジネス英語学習
無料ビジネス英語学習 Words & Phrases 第146弾は、”out of the question” です。
何かに行き詰まり、周りに無理なお願いをしたり、逆に無理なお願いをされることってありますよね。
今回はそんな場面で使える表現を紹介します。
例えば、ヒカは自分の担当するプロジェクトが上手く進まず、上司のタロウに
“Can I be taken off this project?”「このプロジェクトからはずしてもらえませんか?」と報告しました。
「問題外だよ。」と伝えたい場合、あなたがタロウなら英語で何と言いますか?
“No, you can’t!”「できない。」
でも伝わりますが、直接的で強い表現ですので気を付けましょう。
そこで
“That’s out of the question.”「問題外だよ。」
と言ってみましょう。

and today's idiom is "out of the question."
Out of the question. What kind of
question is this?
We will find out but first let's do our
test.
Okay so I say to you, you are my boss, right?
and I say "Hey there was a mistake in
our invoice.
The customer's really angry." You say...
Good, that's right! Could you please sort it out?
Sort it out. Okay. Alright let's go to
today's idiom
Out of the question. Now here's what I
sometimes hear
Let's imagine that Taro is my boss,
again
Okay and Taro assigned me
to a project -- and the project is not going
very well,
so I make a very bad request.
So I say to Taro: "Boss, boss. Can I be taken off this project?
You know I don't want to be part of this
project anymore." It's a very bad request
right?
No one asks to be taken of a project
because it's not going well. You know,
they should
sort it out, right? And Taro says:
No you can't! Just like that.
Okay, okay, relax! Okay, so it's a very
strong sentence. "No, YOU can't."
No you can't. Okay? But sometimes
in business we need to be strong, but we
could be strong without
saying YOU and NO, can't
like this -- okay so if I say:
"You know boss, Taro, can I be taken
off this project it's not going very
"
question."
That's out of the question. Of course it
means, "No you can't."
but you know we're not using YOU
and we're not using CAN'T, but it has
the same meaning. So it sounds a little
bit softer -- better.
than "You can't." That's out of the question.
That request is impossible, like this.
That's out of the question. Okay, let's look at pronunciation.
So that'soutof... that'soutof the
question.
That's out of the question. You try.
Good, okay with my question "Can I be
taken off this project?"
Okay. I know, I know.
just like that. Okay for homework
next time I will make a ridiculous request.
Can I be taken off this project? And you
say:
That's out of the question.
Just like that. Okay, please remember this
and we will see you next time. Thank you.
