Tip 110 ”I think we’re steering off topic.” 無料ビジネス英語学習
無料ビジネス英語学習 Words & Phrases 第110弾は、”I think we’re steering off topic.” です。
例えば、会議のアジェンダから少しづつディスカッションの内容がずれていくことってありますよね。
今回はそんな時に、本来のトピックに戻したい場合に使えるフレーズです。
会議でヒカが会議のアジェンダとは全く異なることを話しだしてしまいました。あなたが議長ならどのように元のトピックに戻しますか?
“It was a great movie. The storyline was…”「素晴らしい映画だったよ。ストーリーが、、、」とヒカが言い出しました。
“We must focus on the business.”「ビジネスにフォーカスしなければなりません。」
と言うと、直接的で少しきつい印象を与えてしまいます。
自然に本来のトピックに戻したい場合は、
“I think we’re steering off topic.”
と言ってみましょう。自然に状況を伝えられます。
steeringとはコントロールする、操縦するという意味が含まれています。

And today's phrase is I think we're steering off topic.
Great meeting phrase, OK.
So you could use this in your next meeting.
But first, let's look at our test for today.
OK. Remember, I want you to
casually ask me to go drinking.
What do you say?
Are you up for a beer tonight?
Yeah, sure.
Did you get that? OK, I hope so.
I hope you could use it, use it tonight.
If you're going to your office tonight, I want you to
invite someone casually. Are you up for a beer tonight?
OK. Anyway, let's go on to today's phrase.
I think we're steering off topic.
Do you know what steering is?
It's like controlling.
You know, you have a car.
We call that a steering wheel.
You control the direction of the car.
OK. So what does this mean?
Well here's what I often hear.
Let's imagine that we're having a meeting.
We've got myself, Taro,
Kenji, Yuji, we got a whole bunch of people.
And we're discussing business.
Suddenly, Kenji and I start talking about something else.
Maybe unrelated to this topic.
For example, I say, yeah it was a great movie.
Yeah, the story was just...
and we're talking. And Taro,
who's the Chairperson of the meeting
says, yeah we must focus on the business.
Oh, OK. We must focus... OK.
Let's work.
OK. What's wrong with this one? I mean, it's business,
we're getting paid, so we should focus on business.
But, it does come off as being a little bit too strong, right.
We must, you must focus on the business.
OK. So a more natural, softer way to bring
the discussion back to business, is like this.
Yeah, it was great movie. The storyline was...
And then Taro says, yeah
I think we're steering off topic.
Oh yes, OK. Back on topic.
OK. Just like that. And it's a great one. I mean,
my example here is completely unrelated to business.
But often in meetings, you know you're talking
about this one topic. But then, little by little
you know, the discussion goes in a different direction.
That's the perfect time to use this.
Well I think we're steering off topic.
Let's get back to this topic.
Great useful phrase.
OK. Let's look at pronunciation.
I think we're steering off topic.
OK. So not steering guh. But it's
I think we're steering off topic.
You try.
OK. So let's try it with my phrase OK.
Yeah, it was a great movie.
The story was just...
OK. Sorry, let's go back to business.
OK. Did you get that?
Great phrase for meetings.
OK. So for homework.
Next time we meet, we're going to be in a meeting.
And I'm going to discuss an unrelated topic.
And you say, I think we're steering off topic.
Bring it back.
OK. So you try this in the next lesson.
OK, thank you.
