例えば、タロウが急に明日休みを取りたいということを上司に伝えたい時
あなたがタロウなら何と言いますか？
先程、タロウが話しかけたことを思い出した上司が
“What did you want to ask me?”「僕に何か聞きたかった？」と言いました。
仮にタロウが”May I have a day off tomorrow? “「明日、休んでもいいですか？」と言うと
常識を欠いた直接的な質問に「何を今さら言ってるんだ。」と言われてしまいそうです。
そんな時は
“I wouldn’t normally ask you this, but…may I have a day off tomorrow?”
「こんなことをきくのは普段はないんですが、、、明日、休んでもいいですか？」
と言ってみましょう。
急にこんなことをきくのはいけないことだと分かっているんだけど、、、というニュアンスが伝わります。
話し方は、I wouldn’t normally ask you this,の後に少し間をあけてから話を続けましょう。

We use this phrase when
you have to make a special request. OK.
You wanna make a request normally
or usually you would not make this request.
But today is kind of special, you have a special problem,
an unusual problem and that's why you're making a request.
That's when we use this.
Let me show you of what I usually hear.
So, let's imagine that this time, I'm Taro's boss.
I'm the boss. Taro is my subordinate, my staff.
And I say, OK Taro,
what did you want to ask me?
You said you wanted to talk to me.
What? What do you wanna ask me?
And Taro says,
yeah may I have a day off tomorrow?
I'll be like, what?! Tomorrow?
Why are you telling me now?
You should've told me 2 weeks ago.
Why are you asking for a day off now?
It's my reaction as the boss.
Right? So, to avoid this,

kind of reaction, you could say this.
