Bizmates初級ビジネス英会話 Point 96 ”look into”
初級者向けビジネス英会話 Bizmates for beginners 第96弾は、”look into” です。
問題の原因を詳しく調べたり、欲しい情報をを調査することってありますよね。
今回はそんな場面で使える表現を紹介します。
例えば、ヒカは同僚のタロウに
“I think our competitor has a new product.”「競合が新商品を出したと思うんだけど。」と言いました。
「調査してもらえる?」と返答したい場合、あなたがタロウなら英語で何と言いますか?
“Really? Please research it.”「本当?リサーチしてください。」
researchは名詞として使われるケースが多く、Please do some research on it.の場合は伝わりやすいですが、
今回のケースでは動詞としてresearchを使うのは不自然です。
そこで、
“Can you look into it?” 「調査してもらえる?」
と言ってみましょう。自然な表現です。

Hello and welcome to this Bizmates for
beginners
video series and today's idiom
is "look into."
Look into. What does this mean?
We will find out, but first let's do our
test.
Okay, so I say we are colleagues
and I say "Hey, there's no more tissue.
Where's the tissue?" And you say...
That's right.
Sorry, I used it all up.
Okay let's look at today's idiom "look
into." Here's what I sometimes hear.
Okay, so I say "Taro, Taro..." we are
colleagues
and I say "Taro, I think our competitor
has a new product." Our competitors,
they have a new product. And Taro says
"Hmmm, really? Please research
"
It's kind of a strange sentence. Please
research
it. Yeah. You know, "please do some research
on it" is may be okay. Please research it,
to use it as a verb, in this case is
not so natural.
A more natural way to say this, is like
this.
So I say "I think our competitor has a
new product."
And Taro says "Can you look into it?"
Very natural. It means to do some
research. Check it out.
Can you look into it? Do research.
Okay, so let's look at pronunciation. It's
Can you lookinto... not "it"
but "wit." Can you lookintowit? Can you lookintowit?
You try. That's right. It has that "W" sound.
Can you look into it? Okay, with my sentence
I think our competitor has a new product.
Okay, I will look into it. Just like that.
Okay for homework next time, I will say
I think our competitor has a new product. And you say...
That's right. Can you look into it?
Very natural. Okay please remember this
and we will see you next time. Thank you.
