Bizmates初級ビジネス英会話 Point 93 ”turn down”
“Not so good. We rejected him.”「あまりよくなくてさ。拒否したよ。」
でも伝わりますが、ネガティブな表現ですので気を付けましょう。
そこで、
“Not so good. We turned him down.”「あまりよくなくてさ。お断りしたよ。」
と言ってみましょう。イディオムを使うことでやわらかい表現になります。

Hello and welcome to this Bizmates
for beginners video series
and today's idiom is "turn
down." Turn down. What does this mean?
We will find out, but first let's do
our test. Okay, so I say to you
Hey, good job in the meeting. Well done. and you say...
There you go.
Thanks for backing me up. I helped you
during the meeting
so thanks for backing me up. Okay,
let's go on to today's idiom "turn down"
Okay here's what I sometimes hear. Let's
imagine
that Taro is hiring
a new assistant. Okay? So he
interviewed an assistant, and I asked
Taro
"How was the interview? Did it go well,
"
not so good. We rejected him."
Oh I see. Reject
is a really negative word, okay? We
rejected him.
So by using an
idiom, it becomes a little bit softer.
So instead of "reject" we can say
turn down. Like this. "So
how was the interview with that new
assistant? Is he good?"
And Taro says "Not so good. We turned him down."
I see. Well that's too bad. Very
natural.
Okay, let's look at pronunciation.
So it's "Not so good" -- with a pause. "Not
so good.
We turned 'im..." the H is soft here;
silent. "We turned 'im... We turned 'im down." We turned 'im down.
Not so good. We turned 'im down. You try.
Good, okay with my question "So how was the interview?"
I see.
Okay. For homework, okay? I'm gonna ask you
How was the interview? and you say
Not so good. We turned him down
That's right! Please remember this and we will see you
next time. Thank you.
