Point 6 ”Could you get that?” 初級ビジネス英会話
初級者向けビジネス英会話 Bizmates for beginners 第6弾は、”Could you get that?” です。
ちょっと手が外せないときに電話が鳴り、相手に電話をとってもらいたいときに使えるフレーズです。
日本人は「電話をとる」という表現をつかうため、
こんなシチュエーションにおいて、
“Please catch the phone.”
などと言う人がいます。
でもこの表現はジャパニーズイングリッシュのため、
ネイティブにはうまく意味が伝わりません。
こんな時には、
“Could you get that?” 「電話にでてもらえますか?」
というようにしましょう。
ぜひ覚えておいてください!
Hello and welcome to this Bizmates for beginners
video series for Japanese businesspeople.
And today's question is could you get that?
Hmmm... very useful in your office.
OK we will learn this.
But first, let's do our test.
OK. So today is Friday.
You want to ask me about my weekend.
What do you say?
Yeah, I was thinking of going to Disneyland.
OK did you get that? Do you have any weekend plans?
OK. All right. So could you get that?
What does this mean?
Imagine that we are at the office
and the phone is ringing.
OK the telephone is ringing.
Ring, ring, ring... and Taro is busy.
Hika, me, I am not busy. And Taro says,
ah Hika, please catch the phone.
And... I'm ah... I don't understand.
Catch the phone? Yeah.
OK, so maybe this is Japanese English
but we don't catch the phone OK. That's strange.
OK, we should say this. So imagine,
the phone is ringing. Ring, ring, ring...
Taro can say, could you get that?
Very natural. Could you get that? Just like that. OK.
It means, please answer the phone, yeah.
OK so let's look at pronunciation.
It's not could you, but it's coujya, coujya.
It's not get that, but it's ge tha.
Could you get that? OK.
Could you get that? You try.
One more time. Could you get that?
Good. OK so let's imagine the phone is ringing.
Ring, ring, ring...
Oh OK, yes. Hello? Perfect, like that.
OK for homework, next time
the phone is ringing. Ring, ring...
And you say, could you get that? Just like that.
Please try this in your office. OK.
All right, we'll see you next time. Thank you.
