“Bite the bullet”の意味と使い方 Bizmates初級ビジネス英会話 Point 237
Bite the bullet ってどういう意味?
Bite the bullet は長く先延ばしにしたり、避けて通っていたことを、ついに「観念して行う」といった意味の表現です。また、単純に、気が進まないもののやらざるを得ないことを指して「やるしかない」という意味で使うこともあります。
昔、歯医者で麻酔をせずに治療を行う場合、患者が弾丸を歯に挟んで痛みをこらえたのが言葉の起源と言われますが、布を挟むほうが一般的であったはずなので、真相は不明です。
Bite the bullet ってどういう場面で使うの?
たとえば、取引先に立て続けに飲みに誘われる同僚との会話の中で:
Justin: You’re going drinking with the clients again!?
You: I have to bite the bullet.
Justin: また取引先と飲みにいくんですか!?
You: やるしかないんです。

Hello everyone and welcome to another
Bizmates for Beginners video lesson
0:00:05.100,0:00:10.200
where every week we introduce a new
idiom, phrase or expression to help you
0:00:10.200,0:00:15.030
with your daily business conversation.
And this week everyone we are going to
0:00:15.030,0:00:21.000
learn the expression: "bite the bullet." So
let's find out how to use it and what
0:00:21.000,0:00:25.710
this means, but first as always everyone,
let's do a quick review of last week's
0:00:25.710,0:00:32.430
class. OK everyone, so imagine I asked
you: So how did the presentation go?
0:00:32.430,0:00:38.940
And it went very well, you did it perfectly.
So how do you say that using the
0:00:38.940,0:00:42.899
expression from last week? I'll give you
five seconds to think about it. You ready?
0:00:42.900,0:00:44.840
Alright, go!
0:00:49.000,0:00:54.800
And time is up. If you said
"I nailed it" then that's exactly right.
0:00:54.800,0:01:00.780
Well done and thank you for nailing this
week's review. OK so let's move on to
0:01:00.780,0:01:06.270
"bite the bullet." Now this is what I
sometimes hear... alright, so I'm talking to
0:01:06.270,0:01:11.159
my colleague, Taro. And Taro is
complaining to me that he's really tired,
0:01:11.159,0:01:17.909
but he's going drinking again with our
clients, so I say: Wow, you're so tired but
0:01:17.909,0:01:25.619
you're going drinking with the clients
again? Taro says: Yeah, I don't want to, but
0:01:25.619,0:01:30.509
I must.
OK, I'm sure we have all been in this
0:01:30.509,0:01:35.759
situation before where we don't really
want to do something, but we have to. It's
0:01:35.759,0:01:42.000
a responsibility, we have no choice. Now
this is okay, but you might hear a native
0:01:42.000,0:01:46.290
English speaker say:
I have to bite the bullet. Okay?
0:01:46.290,0:01:51.689
It means you have to do something that
you don't want to do, but you are
0:01:51.689,0:01:56.790
obligated to, alright? You have to do it.
It's a responsibility, you can't run away
0:01:56.790,0:02:02.460
from it, you can't escape it, you have to
do it even though you don't want to.
0:02:02.460,0:02:08.220
So you have to bite the bullet, okay?
Alright now pronunciation is just as you
0:02:08.220,0:02:11.400
see it here,
you might hear me drop the "T" in bite
0:02:11.400,0:02:16.560
okay, so if I speak very quickly,
it might sound like bi' the bulle'.
0:02:16.560,0:02:22.560
Bi' the bulle', okay? So you might hear me
drop the T here and here at the very end.
0:02:22.560,0:02:28.680
I might cut that short. So "bite the
bullet" okay? So please repeat after me
0:02:28.680,0:02:31.300
everyone: bite the bullet.
Your turn.
0:02:32.380,0:02:35.080
Alright good, now after my question:
0:02:35.100,0:02:38.580
What? You're going drinking with the
clients again?
0:02:40.640,0:02:43.760
OK, that's right.
I have to bite the bullet.
0:02:43.900,0:02:47.420
OK everyone, so
please remember this for next time.
0:02:47.430,0:02:51.720
Alright so our bonus question this week
everyone is another way to say: "change
0:02:51.720,0:02:57.600
our mind." OK so what do you think? Is
there a better way to say this that's
0:02:57.600,0:03:01.980
more natural? If you know the answer,
please leave it in the comments below, if
0:03:01.980,0:03:06.240
you don't know what the answer is, you
can find it in one of our previous video
0:03:06.240,0:03:09.600
lessons. OK everyone so that is it for me
0:03:09.600,0:03:14.010
this week. Thank you always for watching,
have a great weekend everyone, and I'll
0:03:14.010,0:03:17.750
see you next Friday. Thank you.
