“On cloud nine”の意味と使い方 Bizmates初級ビジネス英会話 Point 228
On cloud nine ってどういう意味?
On cloud nine は「とても嬉しい」「有頂天」といった意味になります。
語源は諸説ある中で、1895年に発行されたInternational Cloud Atlas (国際雲図帳)に記された10種類の雲のうち、9番目の積乱雲(入道雲とも)が最も巨大で、低空から非常に高い高度まで伸びる雲であったため、その上に乗っているような浮かれ具合を表す、という説があります。
On cloud nine ってどういう場面で使うの?
たとえば、昇進が内定した同僚との会話で:
Justin: I hear you’re up for another promotion! How do you feel?
You: I’m on cloud nine.
Justin: また昇進するそうですね!どのようなお気持ちですか?
You: 有頂天ですよ。

Hello everyone, Justin here and welcome
back to Bizmates for Beginners where
every week, I introduce a new idiom
expression or phrase to help you with
your daily business conversation. And
this week everyone, let's take a look at
the expression: "on cloud nine." So let's find
out how to use this expression and what
it means, but first let's do a quick
review of last week's class. Alright
everyone, so imagine I say: I want to stop
eating so much junk food. So I want some
advice from you, I ask what should I do
and you think the best way to stop is to
stop completely from now, alright? So
how do you say that using the expression
we learned from last week? I'll give you
five seconds okay, you ready? Alright go.
And time is up, everyone. If you said the
best way is to "go cold turkey" then
that's exactly right.
Good job and thank you for remembering
last week's class. OK everyone, so let's
move on to "on cloud nine." Now this is
what I sometimes hear... alright, so I'm
talking to my colleague, Taro, and I say:
Taro, I hear you're up for another
promotion! Congratulations! How do you
feel? And Taro, of course, he's very
excited, he's very happy, so he says:
I'm so happy! Right, okay. So yes this is very
functional -- "I'm so happy." It's easy to
understand, it's simple, but I think in
this case, Taro can use something to show
more excitement - can use an expression or
phrase that shows a little bit more
energy, so in this case, he can say: Justin,
I'm on cloud nine. I'm so happy! Alright?
So this is a very useful expression when
you want to say "I'm so happy" but with a
little bit more spice, OK?
A little bit more energy and
excitement in your English. So I'm on
cloud nine, okay? Alright everyone
so pronunciation, it's as you see it here.
I'm on cloud nine, so please repeat after me.
I'm on cloud nine.
Your turn.
Alright, very good.
So after my question: Hey, I hear you're
up for another promotion! Great job! How
do you feel?
I'm on cloud nine.
Exactly. Okay?
Alright, so please remember this
for next time. Alright our bonus
question this week is another way to say:
"it is troublesome." If you know what the
answer is, that's right you can leave it
in the comments below. If you don't know
what the answer is, but you are curious,
you can go back to one of our previous
Bizmates for Beginners video lessons and
you can find the answer there. Alright
everyone, so that is it for me this week.Thank you always for watching the video,
have a great weekend, I'll see you next Friday.
Thank you.
