Hello, everyone! Justin here and I am back this week with another Bizmates for
Beginners video lesson.
Alright, everyone. Today, we are going to
learn the expression "Give Me Five."
It's a good one. It's something that
we use a lot, so let's talk about how we
use it and what it means in our lesson
today. But first, as always, let's do a
quick review of our expression from last
week. Alright, so imagine I say, "We have so many tasks recently," and you agree. We
have so much to do. It's hard to keep
control of everything.
So what do you say? I'll give you five
seconds, okay everyone, you ready?
Alright, go!........
Okay and time is up if you said, "Yes, it's really getting out of hand."
then that's exactly right. Good job and
thank you for remembering last week's
expression.
Okay, everyone moving on to: Give Me Five.
Now, this is what I sometimes hear. So, I'm talking to my colleague, Taro and we
recently just finished a really big
project. So, I say to Taro, "You know, Taro,
the boss said we did a great job with
our last project! He's really happy with
our work!" And Taro, he says, "Yeah!
high touch!" and we, you know, give each
other five. Okay, so this is something
that I've heard a lot during my time
here in Japan. "High-touch", now
unfortunately in western countries; in
Canada the States or Australia,
We don't say high touch. We say?
That's right! Give me five! Okay, so it's
totally different. So, you know when
someone does something excellent, or
whenever, let's say, you do a good job
with a project or maybe you're playing
sports and you score a goal, you say, "Give
me five." Okay? So, give me five. Alright?
So, the pronunciation
here, everyone is very simple,
okay?
However, when we say "give me" very quickly, okay? It's "gimme", "gimme", all right? So we
actually drop the "V" here and it kind
of gets compressed. So, it's "Gimme five",
"Gimme five", okay everyone? So, please
repeat after me.
"Gimme five!" Your turn! Okay, very good!
Now, after my sentence, "The boss said
we did a great job with our last project!"
And.... "Give me five!" That's right. Exactly.
Okay, so remember it's not "high touch",
it's "Give me five." Okay, everyone?
Alright, so moving on to our bonus question this week which is: Another way to say
"Lazy". If you know what the answer is,
leave it in the comments below. If you
don't know what the answer is you can
find it in one of our previous Bizmates
