“In a flash”の意味と使い方 Bizmates初級ビジネス英会話 Point 190
In a flash ってどういう意味?
In a flash は「一瞬で」という意味になります。
In a flash ってどういう場面で使うの?
「一瞬で戻ります」「一瞬で終わります」といったように、早さを強調したい時に使用します。会話で使われる口語調の表現なので、フォーマルなメールなどではあまり使われません。
たとえば、このような場面で使用します。
就業時間が来て、同僚のみんなが飲み会に繰り出した後、一人だけ仕事を片付けようとしているTaroさん。そこに、先に飲み会に向かったJustinからLINEメッセージが入ります:
Justin: Are you still at the office? Everyone’s waiting for you!
(まだ会社ですか?みんな待ってますよ!)
それに対して、Taroさんはこう返信します:
Taro: I’m sorry. I’ll be there in a flash!
(すみません。一瞬で行きます!)

Hello everyone, Justin here and welcome
to this week's Bizmates for Beginners.
Today everyone we are going to learn the
expression "in a flash." So this is
something that I use quite often, so
let's find out how to use it and what it
means but first, as always let's start
with a quick review of last week's
lesson. OK everyone so imagine I ask
you: How's your monthly report coming?
But you don't enjoy doing these monthly
reports, it's maybe not very interesting,
it takes a lot of work and it's
something that you're going to have to
keep doing every month, okay?
So how do you respond? I'll give you five
seconds, okay everyone? Alright go!
Alright and time is up if you said "it's a
thorn in my side" then I know how you
feel and thank you very much for
remembering last week's expression. Okay
everyone moving on to "in a flash." Now
this is what I sometimes hear, okay
imagine that I'm at the local pub okay
with my colleagues and we're waiting for
Taro to join us but he's really busy so
I'm gonna send him a message, okay and on
my message I say: Hey, are you still at
the office? Everyone is waiting for you.
And Taro, he replies he says: Ah, I'll be
there very soon. Okay so this is
alright and I understand the message in
what Taro wants to say but maybe we can
give this a little bit more impact okay
to emphasize "very soon" a little bit more
and in that case we can say... that's right
"I'll be there in a flash." So that means
Taro is going to come very soon, he'll be
here immediately within the next one or
two minutes or even shorter. So I'll be
there in a flash, okay? So we can use this
expression to describe any
action that will happen quickly or
immediately okay so it happened in a
flash -- something happened very suddenly
or very quickly. I'll be back in a flash.
OK, so I'll return very quickly, I'll
return immediately, okay? So in a flash.
Alright now pronunciation, very simple it's
as you see it here nothing special this
week everyone so please repeat after me
okay? In a flash. Your turn.
Alright very good OK, now after my sentence: So are you
still at the office? Everyone is waiting for you.
OK very good, you'll be there in
a flash. Alright everyone so please
remember this for our review next week.
OK everyone our bonus question for this
week is another way to say: "will come
soon." Alright so spring has arrived and
summer will come soon. So how do we say
this in a more natural way? If you know
the answer leave it in the comments
below, if you don't know you can find it
in one of our previous videos and shout
out to JP actually I think I hope I
pronounced that right, for leaving a good
example in our last video lesson. Thank
you very much and of course to all
the other people that are commenting on
the videos, thank you so much. Alright and
that is it for us this week everyone
thank you so much for watching and I'm
looking forward to seeing you next week. Thank you.
