Hello everybody and welcome to this
week's Bizmates for beginners video
lesson. Okay everyone our expression this
week is "behind the times." So let's find
out how to use it and what it means, but
first let's do a quick review to make
sure all of you are up to speed with our
expressions. Okay, so imagine I ask you: Hey,
do you have time for lunch? But you are
really busy, so what do you say? You've
got five seconds okay? Go.
Alright, time is up.
If you said "Ah, sorry I'm swamped
with work" then, good job. Thanks for
remembering the expression. OK everyone,
so moving on to this week's phrase
"behind the times." This is what I
sometimes hear: OK so I'm talking with my
colleague, Taro, over lunch and we start
talking about social media, okay? So I asked
him: Hey, Taro do your parents use social
media? And he says: No they're a bit old
and traditional. OK so now this is fine,
but we can use something that's a little
bit more interesting and that is...
That's right!
No. They're a bit behind the times.
OK, so when something is outdated, you
know fashion, for example, or even way of
thinking, you can say that it's "behind
the times." Now just an extra point here,
when you use "a bit it" means "a little" so
if you say, I know they're behind the
times; it's a little bit strong, a little
bit direct. But if you say, yeah they're a
bit behind the times, you know it's a
little bit softer, okay? So when something
is old, traditional or
outdated, it's behind the times, okay? So
pronunciation is nice and easy here, just
as you see it -- behind the times. So please
repeat after me: No. they're a bit behind
the times. Your turn.
Very good. Okay, now
after my question:
Do your parents use social media?
Alright, very good. Okay
everyone, so please remember to use this
in your daily conversation and remember
this for our next review, okay? Alright
our bonus question this week everyone is
another way to say: "my best worker." So if
you've got an idea, leave it in the
comments below. If you don't know, try and
expand your vocabulary; see if you can
find the answer in one of our previous
Bizmates for beginners video lessons.
Okay everyone, so that is it for me this
week. Thanks for watching
and I'll see you next time.
