Point 169 ”sketchy”
“Taro, that company’s reputation, their image, isn’t very good.”
“Yes… it’s a black company!”
“Yes… it’s a sketchy company”

Hello, hello! Justin here with another
Bizmates for beginners video lesson.
This week, everyone, we are going to learn
the expression:
sketchy.
OK, so how do we use it and what does it mean?
Let's find out but first, as always,
let's do a quick review of last week's expression.
OK everyone imagine, I say:
Here is the report you asked for.
How do you respond? I'll give you five
seconds, okay? Are you ready?
Go!
And time is up.
If you said
thank you, you're my right-hand man
then good job, everyone and thank you so much
for studying.
OK, moving on to this week's word
sketchy.
Now this is what I sometimes hear:
Again, I'm talking to Taro my good colleague and I say:
Taro, that company's reputation, their image, isn't very good.
And Taro he agrees with me, so he says:
Yes... it's a black company!
OK thank you Taro. Now when i first came
to Japan, I couldn't really understand
what this meant. So to be a little bit
more clear and to be a little bit more
natural, we can say...
that's right
Yes... it's a sketchy company.
OK, so "sketchy" is a word that we use in
English to describe someone, something or
someplace that is strange,
or unsafe, or untrustworthy
which means you can't trust. Okay?
So for example I might say
that person, he's a little bit sketchy or
he's a little bit strange
or "if you go to this city
please be careful, because that area is a
little bit dangerous"
or it's a little bit sketchy.
OK so in this case
yeah, maybe the company does some strange
activities or we can't really trust this
company. So, we say
it's a sketchy company. Okay?
Alright, so pronunciation is very
simple, it's just as you see it here.
So, sketchy.
OK, so please repeat after me...
It's a sketchy company.
Very good. Now, after my sentence:
That company's reputation isn't very good.
OK good job, everyone. Thank you.
Please try to remember this for next week's class, okay?
Alright, so moving on to our bonus
question today it's, another way to say:
sleeping very deeply.
If you know the answer please leave it in the
comments below but if you don't know, try
to find the answer in one of our
previous Bizmates for beginners video lessons.
Alright, everyone. So that is it for me this week.
Thank you so much for watching,
enjoy your weekend, everyone.
See you next time. Thank you.
