Hello and welcome to this Bizmates for
beginners video series
and today's really short phrase is
my mistake
My mistake. I use this one a lot, OK and
I'll tell you later why. But first let's
do our test.
OK, so imagine we are colleagues and I
say... I look at the P&L and I say:
Wow, our sales this month are very high.
And you say:
That's right.
They're an all-time high.
Very natural. The highest ever in our
history. They're an all-time high.
OK, I hope you got that. Lets go on to our
short phrase "my mistake"
OK, so let's imagine that I asked Taro
for some file. I say:
Taro can I have the B file?
And Taro says:
Yeah yeah yeah. Here you are. And I say
"Taro this is the wrong file." and he says:
Sorry I made a mistake.
OK no problem. So Taro made a mistake.
He should have given me File B but he
gave me File A. But in English, I mean, when you say
I made a mistake it just sounds
a little bit heavy -- like a big mistake.
I made a mistake.
Really? What mistake? You know it just
sounds a little heavy like a big mistake.
So a more natural way to say you "made a
mistake" for a small mistake is like this...
If I say:
Taro, can I have File A?
Hmm, this is the wrong file.
Sorry my mistake. Here you are.
Very natural. So you know, those little mistakes we make in the office
you don't need to say "sorry I made a
mistake" you just say "sorry my mistake."
It's very casual and it's used, you know,
very often for small mistakes and I make
many small mistakes so I say:
Sorry, my mistake...
Sorry, my mistake...
Sorry, my mistake...
OK? So let's look at pronunciation. Very
simple, it's just
Sorry, my mistake. Sorry, my mistake.
You try...
OK good. With my sentence:
This is the wrong file...
No problem. Just like that.
OK, for homework next time I will say:
Hey, this is the wrong file.
And you say:
Sorry, my mistake.
Please remember this and we
will see you next time. Thank you.
