Bizmates初級ビジネス英会話 Point 110 ”What’s going on?”
初級者向けビジネス英会話 Bizmates for beginners 第110弾は、”What’s going on ” です。
“What are you talking about?”
でも伝わりますが、これだと、何か悪い噂話でもしていたかのように聞こえてしまう可能性があります。
そこで、
“What’s going on?”
と言ってみましょう。とても自然で明るい表現です。
Hello and welcome to this Bizmates for
beginners video series and today's
useful question is "What's going on?" This
is such a common question and you can
use it in your office all the time.
OK, but first let's do our test. OK so
imagine you and I are having lunch and I
say "Hey, let's have Thai food for lunch."
That's right. I'm not crazy about Thai
food. OK I hope you got that. OK let's
go on to today's question "What's going
on?" Now let's imagine that I am talking
with another colleague. Not Taro, you
know. "I see, I see. Right, right, right. Okay..."
and then Taro comes and says: What are you talking about?
OK this question is not so good to join
a conversation. OK, because if you say
this question, if you ask this question
kind of in the wrong tone, it sounds like
What bad thing are you talking about?
What gossip... what rumor are you talking about?
What problem are you causing? OK. What are you talking about? So, a better way to join
a conversation is like this: so imagine
I'm talking with a colleague -- "Right, right, right. I see..."
And Taro says: What's going on? Perfect. And I say: Oh well, we we're just talking about
this new movie. OK, very natural! OK. What's going on? It's better than "What are you
talking about?"
OK so let's look at pronunciation. It's
not "What's goinG..." but it's "What's
goin' on? What's goin' on? You try.
Good. OK, and with my conversation: So.. I know what you.. right, right...
Oh we're talking about this new movie. OK
so for homework next time I will be
having a conversation with another colleague, and you ask... That's right. What's going on? Please remember this
and we will see you next time.
