Bizmates初級ビジネス英会話 Point 102 ”acting up”
初級者向けビジネス英会話 Bizmates for beginners 第102弾は、”acting up” です。
機械などが調子が悪く正常に動作しないことってありますよね。
今回はそんな場面で使える表現を紹介します。
例えば、ヒカは困った顔をしている同僚のタロウに
“What’s wrong?”「どうしたの?」と聞きました。
「PCが調子悪いんだよ。」と返答したい場合、あなたがタロウなら英語で何と言いますか?
“My PC has a trouble.”「PCがトラブルだよ。」
でも伝わりますが、troubleは不可算名詞ですので正しくはMy PC has troubleとなります。
また今回はより自然な言い回しをご紹介します。
そこで、
“My PC is acting up.” 「PCが調子悪いんだよ。」
と言ってみましょう。自然な表現です。

Hello and welcome to this Bizmates
for beginners video series and today's
idiom is "acting up"
acting up. Not down, but up.
Okay what does this mean? We will find
out but first let's do
our test. Okay, remember last time
I'm talking to you, we're colleagues and
Kenji is another colleague and I ask you
"Do you get along with Kenji? Do you have
a good relationship with him?"
you say... that's right
Yes we're on good terms. We have a good relationship.
Okay I hope you got that, let's go on to
today's
idiom, acting up. Okay
now here's what I sometimes hear. Let's
imagine
Taro is my colleague and I see Taro
in front of his computer going...
so he looks like he has a problem. So I say "Taro, what's wrong?
You okay?" and he says "Yeah my PC has a trouble."
okay we'll first of all, trouble
is an uncountable noun, so we don't say
a trouble it's okay to say my PC
has trouble with no "a"
but to give it a little bit... to make it
sound a little bit more natural
instead of trouble or problem, you
know, we can say
this: so I say "Taro, what's wrong?
Are you okay?" And he says "My PC is acting up."
Okay very natural!
You know like an electronic device
that has trouble like I could be a car
engine
you know. My engine is acting up
or office equipment like a printer, a
printer is acting up.
The photocopier's acting up. It just means it has
it's not operating properly. Very common
idiom. Okay let's look at pronunciation
so My PC's
acting up. My PC's acting up. You can
connect all those
okay so one more time My PC's acting up
you try... Good. Okay with my question
Hey, what's wrong?
well that's too bad. Okay so for homework
next time I will ask you "Hey, what's wrong?" and you say...
that's right my PC is acting up.
Please remember this and we will see you
next time.
Thank you.
