Hello everyone! Welcome to E-mail Picks!
Today I brought you a tasty little
problem. So right now my company is
trying to make a new Employee Benefits
Program and the goal is to make our
company more attractive for talented
people to join. And, we're not just trying
to attract Japanese workers, but also
people from pretty much anywhere in the
world. To do that it's important to get
opinions from different kinds of
employees about the new benefits program.
So I have sent out an e-mail to several
selected employees in the company and
one of them is Ricardo who is a
colleague working in Canada, but he has
not replied to my e-mail yet, although the
deadline is today. Now Ricardo is not so
good with replying to e-mails. He does not
really cooperate with anything outside
his basic responsibilities. Actually, he
has ignored some of my e-mails in the
past, so yes I'm a little angry because
maybe he is ignoring me again, that's why
I'm going to write an e-mail to remind
him to reply. But I'm an adult, I am a
grown-up so I'm going to try to not show
my anger in this e-mail, okay? But you know
what, I'm a human being and I do get
angry, so I am going to take revenge this
time but in a small and indirect way.
Okay so here goes:
Ricardo, I hope you're not keeping
yourself too busy. Have you had a chance
to read the e-mail I sent you on
September 21st? It's the one entitled "New
company benefits." We would love to have
your input on the content of the
attached file. I've CCed Eric just in
case you're on vacation or something. I
look forward to hearing back. Kyota.
Okay so in the first sentence I'm just
saying something nice to camouflage
my anger. The most important part is my
second paragraph.
I didn't say "did you read my e-mail?"
because that would sound too direct, so
instead I wrote
"have you had a chance to read the e-mail?"
Okay, nicely and instead of writing
something like "I need you reply now!" I
wrote "we would love to have your input."
So I'm trying to keep the message
positive and finally I wrote "I've CCed
Eric just in case you're on vacation or
something."
Eric is Ricardo's boss. I wrote this to
make 100% sure that I get a reply this time.
So if Ricardo is in fact on vacation
right now, then now Eric has the
responsibility to reply to me.
Now if Ricardo is just being lazy or
forgetful, then I have reported his
laziness or forgetfulness to Eric. So I
win either way.
Of course this is not about winning or
losing,
I'm just doing everything I can to make
sure things move forward. I'm a grown-up,
adult. So anyway that's my e-mail to
remind a colleague to reply. I hope you
don't run into such a situation in the
future, but if you do, you know what to do.
So anyway that's it for today. Thank you
for watching and I'll see you next week.
